If the new windows you buy do not meet the new federal guidelines for energy efficiency, you WILL NOT be eligible for the $1500.00 Tax Credit for Energy Efficiency. BEFORE YOU BUY...Please do some online research on ANY new window that you are considering to insure that you are getting the truth and the right information.

Concerning the newly updated efficiency standards for the Energy Tax Credit, the following is posted on Energy Star's website:

"Please note, not all ENERGY STAR qualified homes and products qualify for a tax credit. These tax credits are available for a number of products at the highest efficiency levels...."

The new energy efficiency standards for windows to qualify for the tax credit are as follows:

A WHOLE WINDOW U-FACTOR OF .30 OR LOWER AND...

A SOLAR HEAT GAIN COEFFICIENT (SHGC) OF .30 OR LOWER.

A window must meet BOTH of these new, minimum requirements to qualify. These standards are substantially higher than the current Energy Star standards for efficient windows. An Energy Star label on a window does not necessarily qualify that window for the tax credit. Only those windows whose performance is "at the highest efficiency levels" will qualify for the tax credit.
